Penn’s Grove School
Art Teacher; Mrs. J. Muehlmatt

Art at Penn's Grove is an elective course, optional, and taken every day for one marking period. Students choose their electives for the following year in May.Art in 7th grade teaches the critical, basic skills for the application of the 7 Principles of Design. Knowledge and understanding of the Elements and Principles of Design/Art is the focus for each of the lessons. This class is a must for any student who excels in Art or wishes to develop his/her artistic skills. The lessons taught are as follows:

WELCOME to ART
to all my 4th quarter students!!! :)
Ceramics Construction: design and production of functional ceramic-ware which combines the coil and slab methods of clay construction. The objective of this lesson is to design a functional, ceramic piece that combines the slab and coil methods of clay construction in a complex way. Students each take part in setting up for working with clay. These pieces will glazed at a later date. All glazes used are safe for eating and drinking from. They are dishwasher and micro-wave safe, too, so please use them with confidence.

Design Unit:
Line Composition: Principles of Design illustrated with non-objective lines. Students have been working to create a composition, using lines only, to show all 7 principles of design, which are: balance, unity, movement, pattern, emphasis, rhythm and contrast. Students are given a grace period to turn all work in for full credit.

Shape Composition: Principles of Design illustrated with non-objective shapes. Although the objective is the same as line, this piece presents a whole new set of challenges for the students.
Spacescape: Principles of Design illustrated with desired effects achieved from shading techniques and media manipulation. Color applied with various media for spacescape.
Texture Square: Principles of Design illustrated through various simulated textures. Color applied with colored pencil. Students divide a given space into 5, showing EMPHASIS, CONTRAST & BALANCE. and fill each space with a different texture by incorporating the element VALUE (shading) into PATTERN, using colored pencils.

Grand Finale: Students apply knowledge learned by showing all 7 principles using all 7 elements of design.
This lesson is the culmination drawing for the design unit. Students are meant to create an original, non-objective, design composition which uses all 7 elements of design to show all 7 principles of design. It's a (little)biggie!

General Information:The curriculum for the middle school is designed to round out our students’ education. It is constantly evolving to best meet the State Visual Art and Common Core Standards. The art curriculum, coupled with the management style in the art room, encourage students to work together successfully and solve problems creatively. An emphasis is placed on the elements and principles of design. These are fundamental to the production of art of any kind. Students also work with clay, apply and expand on their knowledge of drawing and experiment with paint and color. Students learn to analyze their own work and that of their peers through managed class critiques.
Assessment and Grading Students are required to place all completed assignments with sketches and preliminary work into the “finished folder”. Students are given ample time in class to complete assignments but are given “one weeks grace” to turn in work if they need more time. Generally, after 7 calendar days, 10 points are deducted for each day it is late. This is a flexible policy and must be worked out with the approval of Mrs. Muehlmatt if additional time is needed beyond the grace period.
Students who miss art class must keep up with their assignments. This can be done before or after school or the work and needed supplies can be taken home. 8th period Academic Lab time can also be used for this. The Art room is available to ANY Penn's Grove student at this time, whether they are enrolled in Art class or not.
Most assignments are worth 100 percentage points. Percentages are converted to quantitative letter grades on report cards. Effort, content and craftsmanship are all taken into consideration when artwork is assessed. Students must meet predetermined, written objectives in the content area that vary with each assignment. This criteria is presented to the students before each assignment by means of a rubric/self evaluation form to assure success.
Students may earn up to 5 extra credit points which are added onto the student’s final average.
Students are required to bring a pencil and their agenda to class.
